Naming Ceremonies

A child more than all other gifts

That earth can offer to declining man,

Brings hope with it and forward-looking thoughts.

- WORDSWORTH

Naming ceremonies go back thousands of years and allow you to acknowledge your new arrival in a meaningful way. This rite of passage existed long before the institutions in which most people are used to seeking them today.

A naming ceremony provides an alternative celebration for those who feel that a Christening, Baptism or religious ceremony is not for them. Naming ceremonies are an opportunity for you to celebrate the birth of a child, or to welcome adopted and stepchildren into the family.

The child or children can be any age. A naming ceremony is a unique occasion for everyone to feel involved and have an active role as they pledge their love and support for the child’s future. You can appoint sponsors/ mentors who assume the non-religious elements of the "godparenting" role.

You may want friends and family to witness your ceremony, or you may want a quiet, simple event. The ceremony could be a brief reflective interlude as a precursor to a party. We will work together to create a ceremony that reflects your values, beliefs and a sense of fun. There are many choices, but the final choice is always yours.

Naming ceremonies have no legal status they are purely ceremonial. The ceremony cannot be used formally to change a child's name.  You can choose to hold the naming ceremony in your home or any other venue of your choice. The venue does not have to be licensed to hold a naming ceremony.
